Older buildings cause higher heating costs
Older buildings are less energy-efficient and can cost up to six times as much to heat as new-builds, experts have claimed.
According to John Slaughter of the
Home Builders Federation, the owners of homes built more than 100 years ago are frequently hit with higher utility and heating bills because of the absence of energy-efficiency regulations for such homes.
"Data that has been collected in recent years would suggest that if you compared a house built today with one built a hundred years ago it might be four to six times more energy-efficient overall," Mr Slaughter confirmed.
"So there are factors like that which will mean that a newly-built
home will be less expensive to run than an older property."
Home heating experts have pointed out that owners of older properties can still reduce energy bills by fitting a modern
boiler, such as those offered by
Vokera or
Trianco.
Figures recently released by price comparison site uSwitch showed that rising water and heating bills are contributing to Brits having less disposable income, with the costs of water and heat going up by 33 per cent and 46 per cent respectively over the last ten years.
