Another biomass boiler brought in to cut bills
A set of schools in the US is following the trend for installing a biomass
boiler to cut heating bills.
Benton Area School District in Pennsylvania intends to make use of renewable fuel resources while benefiting local farmers.
Awarded $350,000 (£170,000) by the Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority for the purchase and installation of the biomass
boiler, the school district has applied for further funding to upgrade its buildings' underground piping and electrical service.
Using corn, wood chips, wood pellets and switch grass pellets to provide heat, the building which houses the
boiler will be designed so that anyone from the community can watch the device in action.
"We're looking at a flexible fuel system," Gary Powlus, superintendent of the Benton Area Schools, told the Lancaster Farming publication.
"I'm not aware of a
boiler anywhere else that can utilise several different kinds of fuel stocks," he added.
With the potential to cut air pollution by 88 per cent, the school district also hopes to significantly reduce its fuel bill.
Closer to
home, a building in Yorkshire that uses a biomass
boiler powered by woodchips recently received an award from the prime minister.
Dalby Forest Visitor Centre was recognised for its "uncompromising commitment to sustainability."
