Biomass boiler leads renewable energy trend

A UK youth hostel has installed a biomass boiler after receiving a green cash grant.

A total of £180,000 from the Lake District National Park Authority's Sustainable Development Fund was shared out across 20 projects in the area.

Eskdale's YHA hostel got the biggest single grant of £24,000 which has been used to install the eco-friendly heating system.

A biomass boiler fuelled by woodchips was recently unveiled in Sussex, providing heating and hot water for 27 homes, a barn, community hall and sculpture studio in Hoathly Hill Community.

As the popular manufacturer Baxi has highlighted, switching to an alternative heating method such as a biomass boiler can reduce annual carbon emissions and cut fuel costs significantly.

"Our reason for change was a philosophical one. Everyone here is concerned about the environment and we knew our existing fuel sources were not helpful to the environment," said Marion Briggs, coordinator of the Sussex project.

A total of 1.5km of pipes was laid on the 22-acre Hoathly Community site to carry hot water to each of the properties.

It was part-funded by EDF Energy, a supporter of new technologies such as biomass boilers, ground source heat pumps and micro hydropower generators.
