Biomass boiler makes Yorkshire building a winner

A building that uses a biomass boiler powered by woodchips has received an award from the prime minister.

Dalby Forest Visitor Centre in North Yorkshire was recognised for its "uncompromising commitment to sustainability."

As well as the distinctive boiler, the building features solar panels and wind turbines to harness nearly all of its energy from renewable resources.

Its water supply comes from the local village spring, rainwater is used to flush the toilets, the roof covering is made from recycled tyres and inner tubes and the visitor centre's reception desk incorporates recycled mobile phones, yoghurt pots and wellington boots.

Presenting the Better Public Building Award, minister for culture Margaret Hodge commented on the growing importance of environmental considerations when it comes to public structures.

"Each of the finalists for the prime minister's award show what excellent design and procurement can bring to local communities and the environment," she said.

"This is especially important now, at a time when our design and construction industries must respond urgently to the threat of climate change," she added.

High-efficiency gas boilers and biomass boilers are also being installed in council buildings in Bradford as part of the ongoing drive towards reducing local authorities' carbon footprints.
