Your Central Heating System - An Introduction
Whatever the time of year your whole home can be as warm and toasty as you want it to be. Anytime that you want a bath or shower, anytime you need hot water in the kitchen, your central heating system can provide it – on tap.
Early Central Heating Systems
Central heating systems were first used by the Romans circa 100ad in the northern extremities of their empire. The Romans developed ‘hypocaust’, literally meaning “heat from below”. Heat was generated by wood burning furnaces and the hot air circulated under a raised floor. Today central heating systems are more sophisticated but principally operate in the same way, a central source, generally a boiler – and distributed around the house, in the form of hot water or in some cases, warm air.
Central Heating Today
Central heating systems come in all shapes and sizes – there is no such thing as a standard system. The central heating boiler will generally be fired by mains gas, but may also run on oil, solid fuel, electric or LPG. A new central heating system can be tailored to your and your homes needs. Working correctly, a heating system will look after itself. A correctly installed and specified system will work efficiently and keep your home at the correct temperature. It will also provide all the hot water that you will need when you need it.
Some central heating systems allow the house or just a part of it to be heated according to your needs, usually much more efficiently and economically than if you just had individual heaters located in each room. Systems can come with automatic temperature control and, when teamed with efficient insulation can provide substantial savings on overall heating costs.
Central Heating Adds Value to your Home
Along with the obvious factors that increase the value of your home, the good location, type of property, overall size, number of bedrooms and a garage, Central heating systems really do add value to your home. In the UK central heating is percieved as a 'must have', indeed, a recent Halifax Building Society survey found that the 'warmth factor' is now considered to be an essential feature of a home and four fifths of respondents (80%) considered central heating to be essential.
