Will energy firms cut prices?

Following the coldest winter in some 30 years, many Britons may be hoping their energy supplier reduces its tariffs, but improving the efficiency of central heating could also help them save money.

Mark Greening, head of utilities for Gocompare.com, said British Gas is the first energy supplier to cut its tariff and other groups are now likely to follow its lead.

"Energy companies don't have a great reputation for swiftly passing on the benefit of wholesale price drops and this quite rightly annoys consumers," he added.

Should such firms lower their tariffs, it may still be short lived due to the cold weather, Mr Greening warned, noting that comparing deals could see customers saving money.

But there are also steps homeowners can make in their own homes to reduce their heating bills.

According to the Energy Saving Trust, having a condensing boiler and heating controls could see Britons caving over £200 on their bills every year.

And affording a new boiler may now be easier, following the government's announcement of its new boiler scrappage scheme.
