'More education needed' on benefits of renewable

Further public education is needed in order to raise awareness of the benefits homeowners can expect if they install renewable energy technology in their homes, one sector commentator has asserted.

Such devices include solar panels, air and ground source heat pumps, but Andrew Leech, director at the National Home Improvement Council, said the general public continues to be sceptical when it comes to such technology.

However, he added it was important everyone learnt of the advantages of renewable energy as it was not only good for the environment but their pockets as well.

His comments follow a recent government announcement that Britons who invest in wind turbines or solar panels will receive up to £900 for the power they produce.

And this is even if they use the energy in their own homes, while it is expected anyone directing excess power back to the National Grid will receive an additional payment.

"I think it certainly will make the public look more at improving their homes and putting renewable technologies in them, especially as they are going to be able to gain some money back as a result of their investment," said Mr Leech.
