Why the high street is set to go green
A new government energy scheme may see more shops and offices making moves to go green, which could include investing in energy efficient technology for central heating systems.According to the Environment Agency, from 2011, UK businesses will have to record their energy use and pay by the tonne for the carbon they emit.
This could see more retailers and firms taking steps to boost their energy efficiency and limit their carbon footprint.
This may be achieved through investing in renewable energy technology such as a biomass boiler, ground source heat pump - both of which qualify as upgrades under the boiler scrappage scheme - or solar panels.
A condensing gas boiler may also be a useful addition, as they are more efficient than older gas boilers.
Tony Grayling, head of climate change and sustainable development at the Environment Agency, said: "By cutting energy use businesses stand to benefit from lower energy bills and could be financially rewarded through the [government scheme] if they perform well in the energy efficiency stakes."
