Independent boiler supplier 'may be cheapest'

Britons planning to take advantage of the government's new boiler scrappage scheme have been advised to consider purchasing the central heating appliance through an independent supplier in order to save money.

Guy Anker, news editor of Money Saving Expert, explains that while a number of the country's largest energy providers are offering money off boilers, in addition to the £400 discount available through the scrappage scheme, this could still work out to be costly.

Indeed, he states it could be "significantly cheaper" to choose to purchase a new boiler through an independent supplier.

Mr Anker spoke to Peter Thom, from Green Heat and a member of the Institute of Domestic Heating and Environmental Engineers executive council, who said choosing an independent installer could work out to be £1,000 cheaper than going through a power company.

He advised getting a quote from a trusted independent installer and the energy supplier to get the best price.

When having a new boiler fitted, Britons should ensure they are Gas Safe registered.
