Why Britons should take advantage of boiler scrappage scheme now
The recent boiler scrappage scheme, which was unveiled by Alistair Darling during this year's pre-Budget report, may have made the decision to give a central heating system a green makeover with a new energy efficient boiler easier for many Britons.
It was revealed by the Chancellor of the Exchequer that Britons who currently have a G-rated gas boiler - making it the least energy efficient - will receive £400 towards the cost of an upgrade.
He stated that he hoped the scheme would see more households saving money on their energy bills, while also helping to bring the country closer to its carbon emission reduction targets.
The campaign has been welcomed by the boiler manufacture and installation industry. Indeed, Boiler Guide has stated that the scheme is likely to prompt a rush from consumers looking to get quotes on the work.
With this in mind, the group advised homeowners to ensure they search around and get a quote as soon as possible so that they do not have to wait for their replacement.
Boiler Guide recommended that a central heating boiler which has an efficient rating of A - such as a condensing boiler or combination boiler - is likely to see people reducing their annual heating bills by over £230, while yearly carbon emissions could be lowered by as much as a tonne.
The government is expected to make £50 million available to fund the scrappage scheme and it is hoped over 125,000 households will benefit.
However, there is another reason for consumers to get their skates on and choose a new boiler.
The Times recently pointed out that only properties with the least efficient G-rated gas boilers will be eligible for the funds at this point "but competition for funds could still be fierce".
"About 4.5 million homes are believed to have a G-rated boiler but, with £50 million earmarked, only 125,000 will be able to upgrade their boilers at a reduced cost when the scrappage scheme is launched early next year," the newspaper warned.
David Weatherall, from the Energy Saving Trust, told the news provider: "We expect the scheme to be considerably oversubscribed, so homeowners should apply at the earliest opportunity."
In addition to the money saving benefits, the news provider claimed the scheme will also have significant environmental benefits - saving an estimated 4.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide from reaching the atmosphere every year, the equivalent of the emissions produced by 830,000 households.
And there are even more benefits to investing in a new and energy efficient gas boiler. Ratedpeople.com claims that making central heating more efficient through the addition of a new boiler is one of the most "cost effective" ways of adding value to a property, which is likely to be welcome news for people hoping to progress up the housing ladder in the coming year.
Ottokar Rosenberger, director of sales and marketing for Ratedpeople.com, said the scheme will be of a great benefit to homeowners both in terms of the money they will save on bills as a result of it and the value they will add to their houses.
He added the campaign is likely to be "instrumental" in bringing the majority of the UK's central heating systems into the 21st century - a time when energy efficiency, sustainability and the environment are of increasing importance.
Choosing a condensing boiler could save as much as a third on current annual utility bills, the Energy Saving Trust has preciously claimed.
