Qualified boiler engineers 'should be contacted for scrappage scheme'
Britons planning to invest in a new boiler following this week's announcement by Gordon Brown of the launch of the boiler scrappage scheme should ensure they contact a registered fitter, it has been urged.
Tom Lyon, energy expert at uSwitch.com, said while people may be quoted a lower price from engineers who lack the proper qualifications, they could be putting their safety at risk.
In light of this, he urged consumers to always contact a Gas Safe Register boiler professional to fit their new boiler.
Under the terms of the boiler scrappage scheme, Britons currently relying on an inefficient G-rated gas boiler to power their
central heating system will be eligible to receive £400 towards the cost of a new boiler.
Mr Lyon noted installing an energy efficient heating appliance, such as a condensing boiler, can save households some £235 a year on their energy bills.
"With the average boiler lifespan of 15 years, this is a substantial saving on energy bills which means the boiler could pay for itself," he added.
