'Check boiler' to storm-proof home

Britons have been advised to take steps to help storm-proof their homes, including checking their boilers.

Cliff D'Arcy, in an article for Love Money, notes that gas boilers should be serviced by a member of Gas Safe Register and homeowners should also ensure they locate the shut-off valve if their hot water tank is located in the roof.

Furthermore, pipes and tanks should be properly insulated while any leaking taps should be repaired, he asserts.

Mr D'Arcy adds that it is also important to ensure central heating is working.

"If you go away for a while, then leave the heating on at a low level in order to avoid freezing damage," he notes.

The writer states his advice is designed to help people storm proof their homes as the temperatures drop.

His comments come as parts of the north-west of the UK have been battered by heavy rain and high winds, which has led to flooding in the region, with the Met Office predicting there is more rain to come.
