Do heat pumps require planning permission?

Britons who wish to go green and install an air source heat pump may soon have fewer obstacles standing in their path.

Housing and planning minister John Healey recently proposed allowing businesses, property developers and homeowners to install such renewable energy technology, without first having to get planning permission from the local authority.

A consultation on the matter will now take place, but should the new rules come into force, Britons may be more able to take action in reducing their carbon emissions.

An air source heat pump can boost the central heating of a property by utilising the heat stored in the air and transferring it to the home.

Because the process does not rely on a fossil fuel source, it is both cleaner - resulting in fewer carbon emissions - and could also have a dramatic effect on annual utility bills.

Mr Healey said: "Our planning rules need to catch up with changing technologies and allow people to take the small measures that make big differences. Not only could this save up to hundreds of pounds in fuel bills, they will also help the environment."
