Off-mains houses 'may consider biomass boiler'

Homes in the UK which are not located on a mains gas network may wish to consider investing in wood-burning central heating, such as a biomass boiler, if they wish to reduce their carbon footprint.

According to the Guardian, some properties do not have gas for their heating, hot water supply and cooking needs and so instead rely on electricity, oil or solid fuels.

"If you rely on these fuels, then, your home may be particularly suitable for green improvements such as better insulation, double glazing and a wood-based heating system," it explained.

A biomass boiler burns wood pellets to produce heat and as homeowners can choose to source the fuel from a sustainable firm they can help to reduce their harmful impact on the environment.

The newspaper goes on to explain that properties built since 2001 are likely to need very little done to make them more energy efficient.

However, those built before this time may wish to consider having a boiler upgrade - such as a condensing boiler if they are on a gas network.
