Avoiding 'boiler blues' this winter

Britons have been advised to ensure they do not fall victim to the "boiler blues" this winter by taking a number of simple steps to keep their central heating in good shape.

The Mirror reports that British Gas has predicted that after the clocks go back and the winter weather sets in, some households may experience problems with their boilers breaking down but that this can be avoided.

Lagging pipes and insulating a boiler with a jacket could not only keep central heating going over the winter, but the increased insulation may also shave pounds off gas bills.

George Clarke, presenter of Channel 4's The Home Show, also told the news provider: "Get an annual service check by a Gas Safe registered engineer to make sure your central heating system works safely and efficiently."

He adds that an older boiler could be less efficient, which may prompt homeowners to consider buying a new appliance.

They may wish to choose a condensing boiler, which the Energy Saving Trust notes is one of the more energy efficient gas boilers on the market.
