A history of central heating
With the nights drawing in and winter fast approaching, many Britons may have seen the start of October as the perfect time to switch on their
central heating.
However, UK homes did not always enjoy such a cosy atmosphere, the BBC has reported.
An article in the media corporations News Magazine by Tom Geoghegan states that there are now only a small fraction of properties which do not have some form of
central heating, but that there is evidence of the systems existing as far back as the Greek and later Roman times.
"But it was a long time before
central heating became widespread and affordable and fired by a gas boiler," he adds.
It was in the 1980s that
central heating first became viewed as a basic living requirement, rather than a luxury.
In addition, the design of properties has changed as a result of the growing popularity of
central heating, with more Britons aiming for an open plan living space today.
Britons who wish to boost their
central heating systems may wish to follow the advice of the Energy Saving Trust, which recommends that a condensing boiler could make the system more energy efficient.
