Thief makes off with boiler

Homeowners from Burnley were surprised when they discovered that their boiler had been stolen late last year.

However, the considerate thief made sure that they turned the water off first so that the premises would not be left flooded as well as without heat.

Pendle Today reports that John Jenkins had forced the window of the property and made off with the boiler which was situated in a back bedroom cupboard.

He also stole some copper piping.

And although the property was saved from any water damage, the owners - who had recently completed decorating in order to rent the house out - were left facing a bill for £1,000 in damages.

Mr Jenkins was handed a 12-month community order and a drugs rehabilitation requirement by Judge Beverly Lunt at Burnley crown court.

While the property owners were left facing a considerable repair bill, the outcome of the incident could have been more serious.

The Gas Safe Register notes that only a qualified engineer should remove, fit or service a boiler in order to reduce the risk of a carbon monoxide leak.
