New boiler 'can add value'

While many homeowners may be concerned about spending their money on greening up their properties while the recession continues to make money tight, one sector commentator has claimed it could be beneficial in the long term.

Speaking to the Independent, Philip Sellwood, the chief executive of the Energy Saving Trust, said that additions such as a new boiler or double glazing could be expensive initially but in the long run they would value to a property.

And for Britons with no plans to move, a greener central heating system would also bring down their energy bills, he added.

However, at the moment Mr Sellwood claimed that the average UK property fell into the energy efficiency band of D or E, well below the ideal green rating of A.

The trust has claimed that a potential buyer would pay £3,350 extra for a home with a good energy-efficiency rating.

It also notes that turning down the thermostat one degree C could save £65 on annual bills.
