Biomass awards handed out

Future Energy Yorkshire has awarded three prizes for contributions to the biomass sector.

The Biomass awards were Best New Business, Innovator of the Year and Installation of the Year.

A biomass heating installation at the Kirkdale Manor development near Helmsley in north Yorkshire that uses wood pellets to provide heat for 25 homes won the Installation of the Year award.

Other wood-chip fuelled installations that provide domestic heating were entered that resulted in a highly commended prize being presented to Dairy Meadows in West Marton.

Howarth Environmental won the Best New Business award for managing to divert 30,000 tonnes of waste wood from land fill in its first year of operation.

Bioflame, which has created the UK's first biomass small-scale electricity generation station that is fully waste incineration directive compliant, won the award for innovation.

The Yorkshire Post recently reported that a disused hospital is to be the site of a new housing development that will use a biomass system housed in the building's boiler-house to provide a heat-source for 75 homes.
