Heat pump popularity spreads north of the border
A new range of apartments in Edinburgh are getting their heating and hot water from eco-friendly heat
pumps, as popularised by Grundfos, Trianco and Dimplex.
News provider edie.net reports that heat
pumps at the city's Grassmarket development will draw heat energy from boreholes in the earth.
Sheffield-based firm Eco Heat
Pumps developed a geothermal system to serve the 17 apartments, boosting their green credentials as well as cutting utility costs for owners.
"A water-glycol mixture is pumped through pipework in the boreholes, drawing naturally occurring heat into the system from deep below the ground surface," explained edie.net.
Following this, the heated water enters the heat pump and the action of its compressor and condenser brings the water temperature up to the levels required by the apartment building's underfloor heating and hot water systems.
While
leading heat pump manufacturer
Trianco has emphasised the need for both producers and consumers to be "conscientious" about heat and hot water production, fellow producer Dimplex recently introduced a line of new models and accessories, creating the widest
heat pump selection in the UK.
