Heat pumps 'offer same capabilities as traditional systems'

A unique building project across the pond features a range of renewable heating techniques, including eco-friendly heat pumps.

The property in Ohio combines three historic dairy farms to form a 12,000 square feet structure.

In order to heat and cool such a space without detracting from its aesthetic qualities, the family decided on a mini-duct system.

With this system, modular air handlers and coils are installed in ceilings, floors and wardrobes, while flexible two-inch supply tubing can be routed through ceilings, floors and wall cavities.

Gerdsen and Apollo, the company who fitted the system, explained: "The mini-duct system utilises condensing units, or heat pumps, similar to a traditional duct system."

They continued that the indoor air handler and coil are equipped with electric heat packs "designed to give the same overall range of heating and cooling capabilities as a traditional system".

In its recent guide to heat pump technology, Dimplex highlighted that homeowners can avail of government 'green grants' to fund a renewable makeover.

Dimplex, which has been manufacturing heat pumps for 25 years, introduced its range of ground and air source models to the UK in 2006.
