Heat pumps contribute to 'greening' of Olympic Games

Eco-friendly heat pumps are among the measures being implemented to "green" the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

A report by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) outlined plans for the provision of energy-efficient appliances in the buildings and sports venues of the Olympic Village.

As well as the heat pump feature, solar power is to be harnessed to light lawns and streets, while Olympic venues will be re-used and recycled when the Games are over.

"The initial score card on the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics 2008 is positive in terms of the greening of the games," confirmed Achim Steiner, UN under-secretary-general and UNEP executive director.

"An interesting innovation is the widespread use in the venues of ground, water or air source heat pumps systems to provide buildings with heat in winter and air conditioning in summertime," he added, although he did not confirm if the heat pumps would be provided by a leading manufacturer such as Trianco or Dimplex.

Trianco has previously emphasised the growing need for producers and consumers alike to be more "conscientious" when it comes to energy consumption, with air source or geothermal heat pumps providing a viable heating alternative.
